The Log Cabin Quilt: Sashing and Border update

Here are the log cabin blocks pieced together in the sunshine and shadow setting. All the paper foundation has been removed [with the help of TMB - thanks!] and the narrow red sashed border added.  I think I like it...

Spot the toe of my carpet slippers!

Production has switched to the 201K.  The 28K's bobbin ran out on Saturday afternoon and I already had a class 66 bobbin wound with white thread.  The large level work space of the 201K's cabinet made the long seams more manageable. Does anyone else ever switch machines part way through a project?

Here is the quilt top a few minutes later with the first long side of piano keys added.  The border has been pressed and the quilt is making me smile.

Next job is to make another long piano key border for the other side but I may get distracted working out how I am going to handle the corner blocks.  I'm not sure I have the strength for mitred piano keys.

  1. Thanks Michelle
It looks like I am nearly out of white cotton shirting to finish this project. I may have to give in and buy a fat quarter which is a pity as so far the project has relied upon leftovers and repurposed fabric from garments. I will sift through my scrap box one last time before going to the shops.

  2. Hi Gavin,

Love the piano key border! It never occurred to me how well a piano key would work with log cabin blocks.

On another note, I'm using my Google Account now to post this comment. I'm the Marianne who owns the Singer 127K. And yes, that means that I've started a blog :-)).

  3. I really like your use of color in this design. Even with only one side of the border, I can tell this is going to look great!

And, yes, I often change machines in mid-project, depending on my mood and to use up thread on bobbins. Each machine has it's own personality so it's like visiting with several of my favorite good friends at a party!

    1. Hi Doc
Thanks for the kind comments. I'm glad you like the quilt so far. I wonder if I should use the red fabric to make the binding as well. I'm looking forward to getting the borders finished so I can start to do some quilting. How are things in the Twin Cities? I was listening to Garrison Keillor on the radio earlier and that brought back fond memories of my trip there last sumer.

  4. Red is one of my favorite colors.... so, yes, I would definitely use it.

Spring has been holding off it's arrival here in the Twin Cities. Not even Garrison can help, although I hear it should warm up a bit next week. What brought you here last year? Did you get a chance to visit the Textile Center of Minnesota, or check out any of our local quilt shops? If you're ever this way again, let us know. We enjoy the role of tour guide! And we know of a great guest house for fiber artists!!
    Cheers!
